"And he went down with them and came to Nazareth,

and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all

these things in her heart."  (Lk2:51)

THE FIRST JOYFUL MYSTERY

~The Annunciation of the Lord~

A Man is taken-up into God....

Optional scripture reading:

"Hearken, O daughter, and consider, and incline thine ear; forget also thine own people, and thy father's house;  So shall the king greatly desire thy beauty: for he is thy Lord; and worship thou him.  The king's daughter is all glorious within: her clothing is of wrought gold. She shall be brought unto the king in raiment of needlework: the virgins her companions that follow her shall be brought unto thee. With gladness and rejoicing shall they be brought: they shall enter into the king's palace."     (Ps45:10-11,13-15)

"I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my son; this day have I begotten thee." (Ps2:7)

"Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel."(Is7:14)

"And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said,

'Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.'

And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.  And the angel said unto her,

'Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God. And, behold, thou shall conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shall call his name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.'

Then said Mary unto the angel,

'How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?'

And the angel answered and said unto her,

'The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy One which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.  And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. For with God nothing shall be impossible.'

And Mary said,

'Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.'

And the angel departed from her.                                                                                                                                            (Lk1:26-38)

THE SECOND JOYFUL MYSTERY

~The Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth~

Mary glorifies God and reassures mankind...

Optional scripture reading:

"My heart overflows with a goodly theme; I address my verses to the king; my tongue is like the pen of a ready scribe."  (Ps45:1)

"And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Judah. And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.  And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: And she spoke out with a loud voice, and said,

'Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?  For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.  And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord.'

 And Mary said,

'My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.  And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.  He hath shown strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the conceit of their hearts.  He hath put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted them of low degree.  He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.  He hath helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;  as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.'

And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house."(Lk1:39-56 KJ-RSV)

THE THIRD JOYFUL MYSTERY

~The Nativity of Jesus~

The Presence of Ineffable Holiness...

Optional scripture reading:

"The Lord hath made known his salvation: his righteousness hath he openly shown in the sight of the heathen.  He hath remembered his mercy and his truth toward the house of Israel: all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God." (Ps98:2-3)

"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government will be upon his shoulder, and his name will be called "Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."(Is9:6)

"Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit; and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.  But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying,

'Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit;  she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.'

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 'Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanu-el' (which means, God with us).  When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took his wife,  but knew her not until she had borne a son; and he called his name Jesus." (Mt1:18-25)

"(And) in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled.  This was the first enrollment, when Quirini-us was governor of Syria.  And all went to be enrolled, each to his own city.  And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David,  to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.  And while they were there, the time came for her to be delivered.  And she gave birth to her first-born son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.  And in that region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.  And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear.  And the angel said to them,

'Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people;  for to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.  And this will be a sign for you: you will find a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.'

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased!'

When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another,

'Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.'

And they went with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.  And when they saw it they made known the saying which had been told them concerning this child;  and all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them.  But Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart." (Lk2:1-19)

THE FOURTH JOYFUL MYSTERY

~The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple~

Divine humility and the sorrowful mother...

www.harmonymedia.com

Optional scripture reading:

"And when the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were fulfilled, they brought him up to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord), and to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.  And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed unto him by the Holy Spirit, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.  And he came in the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, that they might do concerning him after the custom of the law, then he received him into his arms, and blessed God, and said,

'Now let thou thy servant depart, Lord, According to thy word, in peace;  for mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples; a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.'

And his father and his mother were marveling at the things which were spoken concerning him; and Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother,

'Behold, this child is set for the falling and the rising of many in Israel; and for a sign which is spoken against; yea and a sword shall pierce through thine own soul; that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed.'

And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher (she was of a great age, having lived with a husband seven years from her virginity, and she had been a widow even unto fourscore and four years), who departed not from the temple, worshipping with fastings and supplications night and day.  And coming up at that very hour she gave thanks unto God, and spoke of him to all them that were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.  And when they had accomplished all things that were according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.  And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him." (Lk2:22-40)

THE FIFTH JOYFUL MYSTERY

~The Finding of Jesus in the Temple~

Manifestation of the Divine One...

Optional scripture reading:

"I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go to the house of the Lord!"  Our feet have been standing within your gates, O Jerusalem!" (Ps122:1-2)

"For zeal for thy house has consumed me, and the insults of those who insult thee have fallen on me." (Ps69:9)

"Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover.  And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.  And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.  But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintances.  And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.  And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.  And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him,

'Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.'

And he said unto them,

'How is it that ye sought me? Dost ye know not that I must be about my Father's business?'

And they understood not the saying which he spoke unto them.  And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.
And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man."
(Lk2:41-52)
